I was getting this weird error. It wasn't doing anything useful with the exchange mail server. I tried deleting and recreating the existing account within evolution a couple times, it didn't work.
In the end, it took:
evolution --force-shutdown && gconftool-2 --shutdown && rm -r ~/.gconf/apps/evolution ~/.evolution/
(I also did an "aptitude purge evolution", but I doubt that helped.)
Then, of course, recreate the account.
