I think that "protect" is probably the wrong thing here. What it reads like is that she's trying to take back control of her life from this guy and dealing with her issues around gun ownership and training are part of that process. Obviously one hopes she never has to fire the weapon at another person; it seems like the most important outcome here is her gaining a means to draw boundaries and feel safer within them.
