[geek/toys] done waiting for perpendicular recording hard drives
When I built my current gaming / htpc computer almost a year ago one of the reasons I put off buying a new drive was reports that perpendicular recording was coming.
"...linear hard disk recordings max out at 100 to 200 Gb/in². Perpendicular recording is expected to increase the amount of available storage space to up to 5-10 times that..."
In this time Silent PC Review (which I used extensively in building this machine) has added one 500gb hd to their recommended list (continuing their trend of only recommending one hd over 100gb). It is the Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000KS, apparently the only line of hard drives anybody has tried to make quiet.
If you search newegg for "perpendicular" you find 18 Seagate drives and 1 Hitachi. The 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 is a close comparison to thee WD Caviar SE16. It costs 1.3x as much and even on a cost per performance basis doesn't look at all worthwhile.
So while I'm glad perpendicular recording exists as a useful development path, it doesn't look like it's going to have any terribly sudden results.
So I ordered the Western Digital. I figure I'll back some stuff up on DVD, and other stuff up on my existing 250GB Western Digital Caviar.
