Compressed Dynamic Range photo

http://www.chaosreigns.com/gallery/cambridge_cdr_1.jpg.html

I took 9 photos, ranging from 30 seconds / iso 800 / f/4.0, to 0.5 seconds / iso 100 / f/22.6 (14 stops?), merged them to a high dynamic range image, then reduced the contrast back to the LDR here. Not perfect, but fun. Software used was qtpfsgui (open-source) (using save preview, not tone mapping!).

You want to keep the f-stop the same otherwise the focus moves.......

Thank you. I'll probably re-focus instead of maintaining the f-stop, but that's very useful.

It isn't so much that it changes, but the depth of field changes. So in some frames some things are in focus and in others they are not. I would recommend only changing the length of exposure.

Yeah but my other option is to lose 3 stops of under-exposure.

Why not use a tripod and wait?

[identity profile] darxus.livejournal.com 2009-09-03 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Because my camera will only do exposures up to 30 seconds without using bulb.

Then expose them all at the wider aperture.

Huh, yeah, I could do that. I'm not near my limit of shortest exposure time.

That's pretty neat, good job.

Cool! And the two bird pics before it in your gallery are also very cool. Some kind of hawk, do you know?

(In honor of your raptor pics, I'm using my "dinner" userpic. :-)
