Merged from 9 exposures at 2 stop intervals from 30 seconds, to 1/30th of a second, all ISO 800 and f/3.4 (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sensesurfer's suggestion).

I took 9 photos, ranging from 30 seconds / iso 800 / f/4.0, to 0.5 seconds / iso 100 / f/22.6 (14 stops?), merged them to a high dynamic range image, then reduced the contrast back to the LDR here. Not perfect, but fun. Software used was qtpfsgui (open-source) (using save preview, not tone mapping!).

Cameras can only capture a limited range of darkness to lightness. Some times you want to capture detail in highlights and shadows that cannot be captured in a single photograph. This is the solution. The real way, not the surreal way.
