Because I was concerned about the extent of centralization that facebook has seemed to become. I don't trust google significantly more, but now at least it's not only one entity controlling that information.

I would love to see this social media stuff become as decentralized as email. I think an application that aggregated facebook, google+, twitter, and lj would be a good start. With a version to run on your local computer, open sourced, for those who wanted it, and another hosted on the web for people who prefer that convenience. Open protocols would be nice.

Although I realized, for now, I don't really mind checking them independently (although I don't use twitter). I expect to continue posting pretty exclusively to lj. My username on google+ is the same as here. I appear to be able to invite people, but that fluctuates.
