Wanted to build up my ability to walk barefoot for Firefly. Thought hiking at the Fells would work well. Noticed it was likely to thunderstorm, thought that would be even more fun, due to being plenty warm. I had basically nothing but my shorts and my Ka-Bar, because I've been feeling unpleasantly encumbered by unnecessary things that I never had when I did this as a kid. Zeph brought more sensible things, and I was very happy to get to use her bug spray.

My feet are sore like they have never been before. Standing on a smooth floor hurts. They feel very warm. I think that would not be the case if it weren't for all the rocks that have been added to the trails to counter erosion. No problems at all from glass. No punctures.

We got lost, because we didn't really try not to, and didn't care. It wasn't a problem.

We both spent most of the time soaked all the way through, and entirely comfortable with it. Zeph is awesome.

Got to show her ghost flowers. Still freaky looking.

While I never felt cold, I did lose a noticeable amount of manual dexterity, which took a while to recover, and really surprised me.

I planned to get back thirsty, hungry, and wet. Didn't turn out thirsty, due to sipping water as it ran down my face :)

It is very nice to have such warm, dry shelter to come back to.

Got exactly what I wanted. Highly recommended.

It's so much easier to walk on than boulders at a 45° incline.

"I'm too fat to walk up a mountain." "Most people are."

I don't know about most people, but I'm sure not comfortable with not being able to walk up Liberty Mountain in a day. I saw lots of people do it. I saw two couples go up and then come down in one day, and the vast majority of people we saw didn't seem to be packed for spending the night. And my coworkers were confident I could get up the mountain.

We saw one other person about as overweight as me. He was hollering obscenities.

But I spent my weekend hiking in the woods with [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine instead of with my butt firmly attached to my sofa, and that's awesome.

And hopefully it'll motivate me to reduce my body fat and increase my cardiovascular stamina. More.

Maybe in a month I'll try another valley trip, quite possibly Flat Mountain Pond from the West end. Let me know if you'd like to come with me.

Zeph was wonderful to have with me.

I was very much reminded of this:

Due to weather, I decided not to go up Mt. Liberty and instead go with my fallback plan of Flat Mountain Pond Trail. It was good.

I feel a lot more alive.

This hasn't been proofread yet. Maybe I'll get to that, and maybe some more detail, later.

A dozen miles, two days and one night in the woods, is nothing. I have the gear. I can do this. I should have done this already.

You're welcome to join me. I'm planning to spend the days walking, but I don't expect to make a lot of distance.

A fairly common (to me) acronym is BOB - Bug Out Bag. A more specific term that often brings tears to my eyes is:
INCH bag.

The kind of old, kind of hunched over guy who sits next to me at work is about to go for an eight day hike above the tree line, alone. I need to get off my ass.

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine and I hiked the Skyline Trail at Middlesex Fells. I was really enjoying it. Beautiful woods, relatively jagged terrain. Until about half way through the 7 miles. At about two thirds of the way and four hours in, I was done. We found South Border Road far more easily than we had any business doing without a map or knowledge of the area, and walked along the road the rest of the way.

Today I am really wonderfully sore. That will certainly happen again, but shorter next time.

[livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine could have done the rest of the trail, and keeps saying she can't understand how I can run for 25 minutes straight (which she can't) and not hike that trail.
