"The trouble with most forms of transport, he thought, is basically that not one of them is worth all the bother. On Earth – when there had been an Earth, before it was demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass – the problem had been with cars. The disadvantages involved in pulling lots of black sticky slime from out of the ground where it had been safely hidden out of harm's way, turning it into tar to cover the land with smoke to fill the air with and pouring the rest into the sea, all seemed to outweigh the advantages of being able to get more quickly from one place to another – particularly when the place you arrived at had probably become, as a result of this, very similar to the place you had left, i.e. covered with tar, full of smoke and short of fish."

For some time I have had a single quote at the bottom of my main web page. My favorite. I just decided to look up what I changed it to, and when.

2001-04-19 "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats."

2005-12-05 "Life is either a daring adventure or it is nothing at all." - Helen Keller

2007-08-10 "Where are you going and what do you wish?" - the old moon, to Winkin' Blinkin' and Nod

I find the time frames shocking. And I feel like I need to be more careful in my selection.

I am also very recently fond of this:
"For every battle there is a price to pay. Now pick up your teeth and go home." - no fear

Oh, and there's still this:
"Let's just say that if complete and utter chaos was lightning, then he'd be the sort to stand on a hilltop in a thunderstorm wearing wet copper armour and shouting 'All gods are bastards'." - The Color of Magic, Terry Pratchett

I love my quotes collection, which I have actively been building since I found the internet. It is generally agreed that it is a decent way to get to know me: http://www.chaosreigns.com/quotes/

"All government, of course, is against liberty."

"For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong."

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."

"Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under."

"Immorality: the morality of those who are having a better time."

When I first became fond of H. L. Mencken's quotes I felt like I needed to read more about him, fearing that he might be a person I wouldn't want to be associated with liking. I no longer have that concern.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] feng_huang for the link.
